Instead of 13 bringing bad luck for Brandon Arthur, bad luck brought a pair of 13th place finishes at rounds 3 and 4 of the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series. The race weekend started well for Brandon. He was second fastest in practice on Thursday. On Friday morning, rain came to Wild Horse Motorsports Park in Chandler, Arizona causing practice and qualifying to be cancelled. When they lined up to race on Friday night, starting positions were based on the points standings. Brandon would start the Competitive Metals, Pro Traffic Services, Rigid Industries, Toyo Tires Pro Lite Chevrolet on the outside of row three. By turn two of lap one, he was running third behind Brad DeBerti and RJ Anderson. RJ suffered a mechanical failure leaving Brandon and Brad to battle it out for the lead.
“Brad and I would have a great battle the whole race,” said Brandon, “I got around him; taking the lead on lap 11. I held everyone off until we came into the finish line but they called a caution.” Instead of the checkered flag waiving as Brandon crossed the line, Lucas Officials waived the caution flag. With a fast truck under him, Brandon was not worried about a re-start and an extra lap of racing but his luck soon took a turn for the worst. A bushing in the steering linkage failed; causing the wheel to lock up. On the re-start lap Brandon was having a difficult time maintaining control and eventually, he spun out. What looked like his second win in Pro Lite, the first for his new truck, turned into a 13th place finish.
During qualifying on Saturday, one of the bolts in the rear four link broke causing some damage to the shock. Despite the set-back they managed a 9th place qualifying position. Thanks to support from Competitive Metals, Pro Traffic Services, Rigid Industries LED Lighting, Toyo Tires, HRT Motorsports, Method Race Wheels, Magnaflow, FiberwerX, Aeromotive Fuel Systems, F&L Racing Fuel, Impact, FOX shocks, Heat Shield Products, Maxima Racing Oils, Summers Brothers, Wirefab, ECP Powder Coating, Bink Designs and Redline Performance the crew had the necessary parts to make repairs before the race started. The safest place to be during the race is out front. It can get crazy back in the pack as it did for Brandon. “We were making passes and moving up through the field but ran over a tire,” said Brandon, “I went into the hot pits on a caution so the crew could look over the truck; everything was good. That forced us to the back of the pack. From the rear we battled all the way up to 7th place on the last lap. We had a little hiccup with the truck, and then got spun out. We ended up 13th again.”
Loaded with talent and aggressive drivers hungry for a win, the Pro Lite class gets crazy at times; especially back in the pack. The fender banging and mechanical punishment that the trucks and drivers experience can turn fortunes around pretty fast. That’s what makes it such a favorite of the fans. “Definitely not the weekend we were looking for,” says Brandon, “We know we have a fast truck, we just caught some tough breaks. We have some work to do to get ready for rounds 5&6 in Lake Elsinore. I can’t wait to get back out there!”
