San Bernardino, CA
Glen Helen Raceway in San Bernardino, Ca. is known for the steep trails that that go up and down the surrounding hills. When the motorcycles race there, they get nearly vertical on the climbs. Brandon Arthur was not racing a motorcycle in Glen Helen; he was racing his MAVTV / Stronghold Motorsports / Pro Traffic Services / Toyo Tires truck and Yamaha UTV. He was not on the motorcycle track; he was racing rounds 11 and 12 of the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series on the short course track. His uphill battle was caused by some bad luck. He showed up fast and ready to race, but a few gremlins put him deep in the field where the traffic will swallow you up.
“On Friday we qualified 7th,” said Brandon, “We struggled a little bit at first, but once the race started our Yamaha came to life. We moved up to 5th place on lap one. I passed Ronnie Anderson in mid-air off a jump and moved into 4th. We had a couple yellow flags; a lot of people were crashing.
After the re-start I passed Cheek in mid-air for third place but then another caution came out. We had a green, white, checkers and I held onto my position to finish on the podium in 3rd. We also ran the fastest lap of the race.”
Brandon also qualified 7th in the Pro Lite truck and was looking forward to the same success he saw in the UTV race. Unfortunately, the truck was running too hot. Not in performance, instead it was the temperature. Brandon did his best to get to the finish without burning up the motor. They figured it was an air bubble trapped in the cooling system. The water that flows through the cooling system pulls heat out of the motor. When air gets trapped inside, that heat remains and can cause damage. Brandon managed to stay on the lead lap and finished in the 14th spot.
During the UTV race on Saturday, The field remembered the mid-air passes Brandon was making on Friday and figured it would be easier if they just pushed him wide in the turns and send him backwards. Several caution flags did not allow Brandon to get in the zone but in the final corner of the race he picked off Mickey Thomas for the 5th spot.
The team thought they dodged a bullet in MAVTV / Stronghold Motorsports / Pro Traffic Services / Toyo Tires Pro Lite truck but the engine let go during qualifying. If you change an engine, you have to start in the back. Again, Brandon had an uphill battle to wage. He muscled his way through the pack, finishing in 6th place with a flat tire. The team did not get the finishes they wanted but they ran strong and gave the fans a heck of a show.
They refused to give an inch and demonstrated the strength of their team and the program they have put together with the help of MAVTV, Stronghold Motorsports, Pro Traffic Services, Toyo Tires, HRT Motorsports, KMC Wheels, Benchmark Performance, Aeromotive Fuel Systems, Magnaflow Exhaust, FOX, Competitive Metals, CBR Performance, Wirefab, Summers Brothers, ECP Powder Coating, F&L Racing Fuels, Maxima Racing Oils, FiberwerX, Heatshield Products, Bink Designs, Redline Performance, Gear 49, Howe Performance, R2C Filters, Baja Designs, Heatwave Visual, Yamaha Racing, bLU cRU, STEEL-IT, and Mob Armor UTV.
The final weekend of racing takes place on October 21 and 22 at Wild Horse Motorsports Park in Chandler, Arizona.
